MAGIC
Management of Groundwater at Industrially
Contaminated Areas
|
Project duration
June 2005- March 2008
Long term objectivies
Supporting sustainable spatial development by the abatement of groundwater damages
Developing the innovative, integral, emission-orientated management approach developed in the FP5 RTD-project INCORE
Elaboration, implementation and specification of a set of proper tools of groundwater management
Application of the integral approach in the CADSES region
Publication and dissemination of the results in training seminars offered to the main target groups as staff of public administration and service providers
Project in brief
The MAGIC (Management of Groundwater in Industrially Contaminated Areas) project is designed to promote sustainable spatial development by the abatement of large groundwater damages by applying the innovative, intergral, emission-orientated management approach.
The MAGIC project is fulfilled under INTERREG IIIB CADSES Programme and utilizes the transnational co-operation, experiences of Project Partners for a wider dissemination and know-how transfer on technical, administrative and management topics in CADSES region.
Project partners are institutions from three European countries: Poland, Germany and Czech Republic.
Project structure consists of six workpackages (WP):
-
WP1 Basic information and planning
-
WP2 Field studies & lab analysis
-
WP3 Groundwater Modelling
-
WP4 Evaluation of investigation results
-
WP5 Sharing best practice in administrative procedures
-
WP6 Management, coordination
The project is structured in 6 workpackages. The workpackages 1 to 4 comprise technical actions to develop applicable planning methodologies for the implementation of the new technical approach. Workpackages 5 and 6 cover administrative aspects: the implementation into the daily work of local administration and the dissemination of the results in the CADSES. During the application, the tools will be modified and optimised. The main objective of the project is to develop simple and flexible technical and administrative tools, which can be adapted to the specific needs of the partners and end-users in the CADSES.
Key accomplishments
-
The implementation of the innovative concept in 4 pilot project areas
-
The elaboration of the guidance for practical application of the MAGIC concept
-
The transnational exchange of experience and dissemination

IETU's role in the implementation of the project
IETU Task in the Project:
- WP4 Leader (dr Jadwiga Gzyl),
- Participation in: WP1, 2, 4, 5 i 6.
IETU role in the project is focusing on :
- Application of GIS for site description
- Chemical analysis of groundwater and surface water
- Groundwater-driven health risk assessment
- Development of the hints for selection of groundwater remediation technology
- Providing a concept for landfill revitalization aiming at groundwater pollution abatement
- Sharing best administrative practise for implementation the integral approach into the legal framework of Cadses countries
