The Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas (IETU) is a research and development unit acting under the Polish Ministry of Environment. The Institute was established in 1972 as a Katowice Branch of the Institute of Environmental Protection with the status of Environmental Protection Centre. IETU has been functioning as an independent organisation under its present name since 1992.

The goal of the scientific and research activities of the Institute is to develop the scientific basis for policies and strategies aimed at sustainable development of the environment of urbanised and industrialised areas.

Functionally, IETU role is to serve as a scientific and research facility reporting to the Minister of Environment, as well as an advisory unit and provider of expert knowledge to the Ministry of Environment, State Inspection of Environmental Protection and other relevant regulatory bodies, governmental administration units, local governments and industries all over Poland.

Building on our knowledge and expertise in the area of an integrated, interactive and multidisciplinary approach to the management of degraded areas the Institute was recognised as a Polish Centre of Competence “CEDAR” – Centre for Sustainable Redevelopment of Degraded Areas in 2002.

International projects performed for the World Health Organisation, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Energy, Economic Commission for Europe and European Union allowed the Institute to gain an extensive experience in collaborating with foreign partners.

At present, IETU is partner in 12 international consortia executing RTD projects of the 5. Framework Programme of Research, Technological Development and Demonstration of the European Union. Our activity in FP5 has been recognised by two nominations to the “Crystal Brussels” award in the category of research and development units (in 2001 and in 2002). In individual category, such nomination was awarded to Dr. Janina Fudała.

Beside conducting research projects, IETU is provider of consulting and services to clients at home The scope of our offer includes environmental audits, environmental impact assessments (EIA), water supply and wastewater discharge assessments, waste management programmes, environmental action plans, etc.

Since 1994 the Institute has been registered in the PHARE/TACIS Central Consultancy Register under the number POL 18479, and in the Consultant Database of the World Bank/Inter-American Development Bank (DACON) under the number 2312.
