2nd International Scientific Conference INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR REVITALIZATION OF
DEGRADED AREAS Under the patronage of Maciej Nowicki, Minister of Environment 4 th – 6th of June 2008, Ustroń, Poland
The
Centre of Research and Underground Mining Supervision Ltd. in Lędziny
in cooperation with the Institute for Ecology of Industrial Areas in
Katowice organise an international scientific conference “Innovative
Solutions for Revitalization of Degraded Areas”
to
be held in Ustroń, Poland, 4 th – 6th of June 2008. The
main objective of the Conference is to present the achievements and
outputs of research projects as well as the existing practical,
technical and organizational solutions supporting the development of
areas degraded by extraction processes of coal and metal ores,
abandoned steel mills and other facilities related to metallurgical
industry, especially those located within urban agglomerations. The
Conference will also address soil quality management from the
European Thematic Soil Strategy perspective as well as in the
context of legal, financial, technological, health and information
issues. Examples of best practices of post-industrial areas
management from Poland and other countries will be presented to
demonstrate effective remediation options, organisational solutions,
financial engineering and transformations of industrial facilities. The
intention of the Organisers is to initiate a discussion during the
Conference that will focus on making a change in the up-to-date
extraction practices which results from the planned amendments of
the geological and mining law and the new extraction waste act.
Facility which generates the waste will be responsible for the
identification and application of such a technology of mineral
extraction which prevents or minimizes the volume of spoils and
their negative impact on the environment and human health.
The
Conference will contribute to a multi-level integration of different
stakeholders for which supporting sustainable development of
post-industrial areas is a priority issue. The
invitation is extended to all stakeholders involved in remediation
and redevelopment processes of degraded areas, especially
post-industrial sites. Representatives of the following sectors are
welcome to take part in the conference: state administration, local
governments, scientific and research centres, mining companies, site
owners, contractors dealing with soil and groundwater remediation
and land reclamation, construction companies, financial institutions,
